Ibraaheem bin Adham said:

It reached me that Umar bin Abd al-Azeez (rahimahullaah) said to Khaalid bin Safwaan (rahimahullaah), "Admonish me," so Khaalid said, "O Chief of the Believers, there are a people who have been deceived by Allaah's veiling of [their sins] and good praise (of them) has put them to trial. Thus, do not let the ignorance of others of you overwhelm your knowledge of your own self. May Allaah protect us and you from being deceived by Allaah's veiling (of our sins), and from being pleased with the praise of the people, and from falling short and being neglectful in what Allaah has obligated upon us, and from inclining to the desires." So he (Umar bin Abd al-Azeez) cried and said, "May Allaah protect us and you from following desires."

Note: The meaning of this is that Allaah is merciful to His servants in that He veils them (conceals and hides their sins) and hence the true reality of a person is hidden from the people. However, this veiling of Allaah of a servant can deceive a person and at the same time, when he receives praise from others on account of what they see outwardly from him (unaware of that which is hidden and which Allaah has hidden from them, out of His mercy for His servant) then he is deceived by all of this. Hence, the ignorance of others of him (who praise him from what they see of him) has overwhelmed and dominated his knowledge of his own self and allowed him to be deceived. May Allaah protect us from following our desires.
